The problem that arises when we are experiencing doubt on our spiritual path is that it creates tension in the mind. We are unsure of the path we are on, what is the best path, or how to move forward. This results in tension when we waver between “staying the course” or “trying something new” or “giving this up altogether.” We just don’t know. The restless mind needs a resolution to be sure and confident, not confused and lost. So, mental tension arises from this confusion.
As we know, awakening to our true nature is not easy. But, without Ease it is impossible. So, how do we bring Ease into our practice?
If we try to push the doubt away, this resistance to our current situation only produces more tension and suffering.
We often feel the doubt as an indication that our practice is weak or wrong in some way. Can we accept the doubt as our current experience without judgement of our worthiness? Can the mind be filled with doubt and be at ease at the same time?
We can also become more isolated if we feel that we are the only ones experiencing a problem with our practice. No one else seems to be having difficulty. Everyone on Facebook or Twitter seems to be having a wonderful time. We ask ourselves, “Why am I having so much difficulty with my life?”
Notes on Doubt:
Resistance is futile. Acceptance of our current experience is fruitful.
All feelings and emotions can arise in our awareness, along with the ease of resting in our field of care.
Connecting with a group of practitioners allows us to see that others are suffering in the just the same way that I am suffering. I am not alone in this. And perhaps, their experiences can help us understand what is going on in our own mind.
The remedies for all of these aspects of Doubt are already a part of the practices that we do each week. We just need to be reminded of the purpose of each part of the practice.
We need to become curious about the movement of the mind as we practice to see the effects of our meditation. And, we need to connect with others and share the joy of being in relationship with other beings.
