“Resistance is futile” is a quote from the Star Trek franchise, where it is often uttered by the Borg, an alien culture that wants to take over the universe. The full quote is, “We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.”
We could adapt that attitude within our spiritual practice, but in a much more compassionate way. “We are Awareness. You will be awakened. Resistance is futile.”
In meditation practice, this is good advice. To resist what arises in the mind is a futile attempt to stop something from happening that has already happened. A thought or feeling or sensation has arisen that is uncomfortable or unpleasant. To resist what is already present is a subtle form of violence in the mind.
Remaining open to what arises, without resistance, and accepting the present moment, just as it is, gives us the power to choose our response, rather than react in habitual ways.
Here is a short poem for your consideration from Sacred World by Erik Pema Kunsang, a Buddhist translator, teacher and meditation instructor.
A Gentle Open Mind
Sometimes, that’s all it takes:
A gentle open mind, so simple.
To disarm resistance and even ill-will,
To thaw this heart of mine. It’s that quiet warmth from a stranger,
The humorous acceptance from a friend.
The unguarded trust and curiosity
In the eyes of the unhurt child. This gentle open mind, that is natural,
As easy to wear as a tailored shirt of silk,
Is my true refuge, my soul’s bodyguard,
Known by everyone in the hundred names for love.
We can accept that resistance and the tendency to be distracted in our practice is the normal condition for all who step onto the path of spiritual practice. Our task is to see these habitual patterns clearly. Then, understanding their true nature by relaxing into them. That will allow their eventual release, opening us to a new level of understanding and insight.
All without resistance.
