Right Attitude III

Usually, when we run into difficulties in our lives, we label these as “Problems.” We interpret them as bad situations that prevent us from doing or getting what we want. This often involves much regretting of how we got into this situation and worrying about how we are going to resolve it.

Funnily enough, there is a view in many cultures, religions, and spiritual teachings that looks at “problems” in a different way.

Here are some common aphorisms that begin with “A problem is…”:

  1. A problem is a chance for you to do your best.
  2. A problem is a test of your character.
  3. A problem is an opportunity in disguise.
  4. A problem is not a stop sign, but a guideline.
  5. A problem is only a problem if you make it one.
  6. A problem is an invitation to innovate.
  7. A problem is a puzzle waiting to be solved.
  8. A problem is a chance to learn and grow.
  9. A problem is the first step to a solution.
  10. A problem is a reminder to reconsider your approach.

If we experience pain in the body, it is an indication that we have to address some imbalance in our physical system. In the sense that we become aware of the imbalance, the pain is a positive indication to us that some change is required. People who are born without the ability to feel pain die younger than the rest of us. The ability to feel pain increases our chance of survival. That is a good thing.

Problems are the signals to the mind that something in our lives is not in balance; that we are not in alignment with our true nature. The Buddhists consider difficulties as our best teachers, as they can point out the areas in our lives that need attention. If we ignore those signals, the problems get worse. The most skillful way to deal with any problem is to be fully aware of the situation around the problem and to be open to all possibilities for resolution and growth resulting from handling the difficulties in the best way we are able to in this moment.

So, should you choose to do so, pick one of the aphorisms mentioned above and hold it in your awareness in the coming weeks. The intention is that seeing difficulties arising as opportunities for growth will provide less tension and more ease as we move through our day.
