3. The Illusion of Separation
The ego creates the illusion of separation between ourselves and the rest of existence. We perceive ourselves as distinct entities, separate from others and from the world around us. This illusion of separation is a central aspect of the ego’s structure. In reality, according to Non-Duality, there is no separation—everything is interconnected, part of a singular, unified whole. The ego, however, obscures this truth, making us believe in the duality of self and other, subject and object.
4. Obscuration of True Nature
Our true essential nature, in Non-Duality, is pure awareness, aware being, or consciousness. It is the ground of all experience, the formless presence that is always here, regardless of the changing content of our lives. The ego, however, obscures this true nature by focusing our attention on the transient and the particular—our thoughts, emotions, and experiences—rather than on the unchanging awareness that underlies them. This obscuration leads us to identify with the limited, impermanent aspects of ourselves, rather than with the infinite, eternal consciousness that we truly are.
