7. Moving Beyond the Ego
Moving beyond the ego does not mean destroying it or suppressing it. Rather, it involves recognizing the ego for what it is—a useful tool for navigating the world, but not the ultimate truth of who we are. As we deepen in our understanding of Non-Duality, we can learn to use the ego without being used by it, to engage with the world from a place of presence and awareness rather than from the narrow confines of the egoic self.
In summary, the ego is a mental construct that creates the illusion of a separate self, leading to suffering and obscuring our true nature. By understanding its nature and recognizing the ways it operates in our lives, we can begin to transcend the ego and reconnect with our true essence—pure awareness, the undivided consciousness that is our true self. This process is the heart of the Non-Dual journey, leading to greater peace, freedom, and fulfillment in life.
Many spiritual traditions talk about the death of the ego or destroying the ego to achieve awakening. In fact, there is no need to destroy anything to awaken. Simply being aware of and understanding the working of the mind: understanding the function of the ego and seeing it just as it is, allows us to view it as another part of who we are, without needing to believe it controls our mind.
