Waiting In (or On) Line Practice

While waiting in line at the store, stand comfortably straight, noticing any tension in the body and allow that holding to soften a little.

Then notice what thoughts are going through your mind as you ‘wait’, like:

  • She really has 13 items not 12!
  • I really wish the line were moving faster…
  • Why don’t they open another register?
  • Can’t they see I am in a hurry?
  • etc.

Allow yourself to stand in line and just be standing, just be breathing, and allowing thoughts to arise and dissolve on their own without having to follow them, engage with them, or push them away?

  • Advanced Line Practice: (for serious practitioners only)

As you approach the clerk, look into their face. Notice what comes across to you: Fatigue, Impatience, Kindness, Boredom, Concern, Happiness… etc. Recognize that they are just like you with anxieties, worries, joys, fears, and desires about how their day will be today. When you get directly across from the clerk try to engage with eye contact for a brief moment and mentally wish them deep well-being and happiness.

  • Very Advanced Line Practice: (for very serious practitioners only)

After the Advanced Line Practice above, actually wish the clerk well-being out loud in a way that is comfortable for you:

  • Thanking them with sincerity and awareness
  • Wishing them a nice day
  • Offer a nice comment about the service
  • etc.

Find a way to connect with them that works for you in the moment.
