Neighborhood Practice

You walk the same routes many times a week: from home to the corner store, around your neighborhood for exercise, from your home to the bus stop, from the parking lot to your office/classroom, even down the hall at work or school, etc.

For the next week, set the intention to notice something new on your walks, each time you go.

If you are outside:

  • Notice the colors of the houses and buildings you pass
  • Be aware of the change in the plants from day-to-day
  • What is your view of the sky from from day to day
  • who are the people you see on a regular basis
  • who are you seeing for the first time
  • etc.

If you are inside a building

  • Notice the color and pattern of the carpet or tiles that you walk on
  • Notice the texture of the walls. Are they painted, wall-papered, cement block, etc.
  • What signs, posters or decorations are on the walls?
  • Is there an office you never noticed before (with someone inside?)
  • Do you pass any windows? What can you see from that window?
  • etc.

If you practice this with diligence, you will be amazed at what you are missing in your life. And maybe you will be surprised by what you find, both inside and outside.
